What a difference 5 years can make…
It’s exhilarating to be a part of an industry where change happens everyday and the world around you is constantly being transformed, and the rules re-written. That’s what I love about technology. I couldn’t possibly imagine working in a field like politics where change happens in slow motion and only after the 15th try will something possibly change ā only to be rolled back by the next person to hold the position. Nope, technology is where I will stay.
Think about where we were just five years ago. None of us had iPhones, we were all walking around with the hottest new flip phones (oh wow and it even has a camera too!) and the concept of a smartphone was just that … a concept. Only a handful of universities were on Facebook and no one else really even knew what it was. Other popular social networking sites that we couldn’t survive the day without wasting time on such as Twitter, YouTube, and Yelp were non-existent. How did we live? When we needed directions, we used MapQuest because Google Maps didn’t exist, and there was no way we could possibly imagine zooming in on our houses via satellite from a website ā what?! You were interesting if you mentioned having a blog. If you wanted to read a book, you bought it at Barnes & Noble. What a life.
Today, everyone spends too much of their time on these social networking sites and can’t remember living without them. Every other phone on the street is an iPhone and a majority of them are smart phones. We use advanced satellite imagery to plan our trips before we leave. We carry around advanced mobile computers like the iPad and have more advanced computing capabilities overall that far out match the computers from 5 years ago.
For me, thinking about how these technological changes can make such a large impact on our daily life in such a short period of time, fires me up. I mean, don’t you just have to wonder, what comes next?
